Gallery UNO Projektraum Berlin’s presentation for Paper Positions Berlin 2026 frames paper as an autonomous artistic field, with a focus on surface, luminosity and material precision. Presented at Flughafen Tempelhof, Haupthalle, the two-artist project brings together Birgit Huttemann-Holz (1965, Detroit, USA) and Vladimir Kordiukov (1953–2009, Krasnoe-Na-Volge, USSR), connecting works created more than twenty years apart through a shared language of gold, constructed image space and materially charged surfaces.
Silence is Golden
In a moment when collectors and institutions increasingly turn toward tactile works with strong object presence and refined technique, Huttemann-Holz and Kordiukov meet on paper with distinct artistic positions. Huttemann-Holz presents a unique encaustic monotype where saturated chromatic fields interact with gold filaments and metallic pigments accents, creating depth through changing reflection and surface tension. Floral impulses and painterly movement remain perceptible without becoming illustrative, while gold functions as light carrier and structural emphasis.
Kordiukov is represented with collectible works on paper incorporating layered paper elements, charcoal and hand-applied patinated gold. The large-scale composition is constructed through linear charcoal drawing, slightly softened at points of contact, which moves across and activates the built surface. Patinated gold appears as a measured accent within the structure, while selectively applied varnish, not covering the entire sheet, introduces shifting reflectivity and emphasizes the work’s object quality. His participation in the 2026 edition marks his second appearance within the framework of Paper Positions, reinforcing the ongoing international relevance of his work.
Placed in dialogue, the two practices demonstrate how materially grounded approaches sustain conceptual clarity across generations. Gold operates as a shared strategy linking natural impulse and structural order. The presentation is curated by Anna Galeeva.
